Our fascination with bamboo began more than 30 years ago. What started as a simple interest gradually grew into a passion, inspired by remarkable people, places and the extraordinary possibilities of this ancient plant.
An early influence was a visit to Bali, where the pioneering work of John Hardy and the Green School opened our eyes to bamboo not simply as a plant, but as a beautiful, sustainable and highly versatile building material.
Inspired, we began planting a small collection of bamboo on our farm in Langkawi. We also took our first step into bamboo construction, putting up a simple but substantial building made entirely from bamboo using traditional building methods.
A subsequent visit to Chiang Mai reignited our enthusiasm. We were captivated by the beautiful buildings and structures created almost entirely from bamboo. We also had the opportunity to see the extraordinary collection of bamboo specialist Dieter Ohrnberger, whose collection of some 200 bamboo species inspired us to expand our own.
Over the years, our modest collection grew to around 100 different species of bamboo, turning a personal passion into what we believe is now the largest bambusetum – or living bamboo collection – in Malaysia.
Today, visitors to the farm can walk among bamboos of remarkably different sizes, colours and forms and discover just how diverse this family of plants can be.
