Bamboo is more than a beautiful plant. It has enormous potential as a renewable building material. It grows rapidly, can be harvested repeatedly and, when properly selected, treated and constructed, can be used to create buildings that are both practical and beautiful.
Yet in Malaysia, serious interest in bamboo as a viable construction material remains relatively limited. We hope to play a small part in changing that.
Our next chapter is an ambitious one. Plans are underway to establish a Langkawi Bamboo Centre on the farm – a place dedicated to demonstrating the journey of bamboo from the ground to the finished structure.
The Centre will showcase the cultivation, harvesting, treatment and construction of bamboo, bringing together the practical knowledge needed to use this remarkable natural resource successfully. Our hope is that it will become a place where visitors, students, growers, craftspeople, architects and builders can learn more about bamboo and its possibilities.
If all goes according to plan, we hope to bring the Langkawi Bamboo Centre to life within the next year or so – and, to our knowledge, it will be the first centre of its kind in Malaysia.
What began more than three decades ago with a few bamboo plants has grown into something much larger: a collection, a passion and, we hope, a small contribution towards a more sustainable way of building for the future.
