We love it when great travel experiences are shared by people who truly understand what meaningful travel is about. Recently, one of our trusted Fora advisor friends gave Langkawi Cooking School a wonderful shoutout — and we couldn’t agree more.
Her full review here: Christmas in Malaysia
As she beautifully described, any food lover will fall in love with this experience.
Langkawi Cooking School, located at Buluh & Tebing Organic Farm, is not your average cooking class. It’s a rare, immersive farm-to-table experience, thoughtfully created in the heart of nature and rooted in Malaysian culinary heritage. When we first discovered it, the school had only been open for six months — and it already felt like a hidden gem waiting to be shared.
Cooking in the Middle of a Farm
The setting alone makes this experience special. The cooking school is housed in a stunning bamboo structure, tucked away from the main road and surrounded by trees, an organic garden, and a peaceful fish pond. It’s quiet, authentic, and instantly grounding — the kind of place where time slows down and your senses wake up.
The morning experience begins with a guided visit to the local market, from the wet market to stalls selling fresh vegetables, herbs, and spices. It’s not only educational but also a great opportunity to pick up a few edible souvenirs to take home and recreate Malaysian flavors in your own kitchen.
Truly Local, Thoughtfully Prepared
The menu is flexible and caters to different dietary preferences. During this session, the group prepared a delicious lineup including:
- Chicken satay
- Pumpkin and chicken soup
- Stir-fry turmeric chicken
- Beef rendang
- A fragrant pandan dessert
What makes it truly special is that ingredients are sourced locally, with vegetables harvested directly from the farm and additional produce handpicked from nearby markets. You taste the freshness in every dish.
Guided With Heart and Stories
Rose and her wonderful team guide guests through every step of the process. More than just instructors, they are storytellers — sharing cultural insights, cooking tips, and personal anecdotes that bring each dish to life.
The class is intimate, capped at eight guests (we were six, which felt perfect), allowing for real interaction and connection. After cooking each dish, everyone gathers at a communal table to enjoy the meal together — a simple but powerful moment of shared experience.
The full morning session lasts about five hours, including hotel pick-up and drop-off, which the team generously arranges.
Why We Recommend It (And Why You Should Book)
For anyone who loves to immerse themselves in local culture, this experience goes far beyond cooking. It’s about discovering vibrant Malaysian flavors, understanding sustainable food practices, and connecting with the land and people behind the cuisine.
Whether you’re a passionate foodie or a curious traveler looking for something authentic, Langkawi Cooking School offers a hands-on experience that stays with you long after the last bite.
So once again — thank you for highlighting this beautiful experience.
And to anyone planning a trip to Langkawi: make a reservation early. Spaces are limited, groups are small, and this is one of those experiences you’ll be talking about long after your holiday ends.
