Normally, we are very hospitable and welcome all visitors with open arms. But last week, we had two visits from a family who were not only unpleasant, but decidedly unwelcome. We hope they never, ever visit us again!
Although otters are fairly common in Langkawi, they are rarely seen outside their usual habitat — rivers and mangroves. So we were more than a little surprised when they came calling at our farm.
What started as an unexpected visit soon became rather more troublesome than charming. These sleek, intelligent creatures may look adorable, but they can be remarkably destructive when they decide that somewhere takes their fancy.
Our unwelcome guests seemed particularly interested in exploring the farm, leaving us wondering whether they had mistaken it for their own private playground.
We have always loved sharing our farm with nature and are accustomed to all sorts of visitors, from birds and butterflies to bees and the occasional monitor lizard. But these particular guests pushed our hospitality a little too far!
We can only hope that, having satisfied their curiosity, they will return to the rivers and mangroves where they belong — and leave our farm in peace.
Some visitors are welcome. Others are best admired from a distance!
